Currently in it’s fifth season at ABC, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has defied predictions of cancellation time and time again. While the series doesn’t boast huge numbers, it does bring in solid and consistent ratings with huge boosts from DVR. This year it was joined by another Marvel series Inhumans which while expected to be big for the network, didn’t do quite as well as they were likely hoping.
With ratings that aren’t through the roof, will the pair of Marvel series return again next year? Chatting with reporters during her executive session Q&A, ABC entertainment chief Channing Dungey commented on the future of both Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.& Inhumans at the network. When it comes to the future of Phil Coulson and company, things are seemingly looking good for a sixth season.
“The creative this season, I honestly think, has been the strongest its ever been. We’ve been really excited about what the producers have been talking about for the second half of the season. I’m really looking forward to hearing them come in and talk about what their ideas would be for season 6, so we can make a better determination about whether we’re going to order another season or not.”
When it comes to the future of Marvel’s Inhumans though? Well, let’s just say Dagney’s comments weren’t as optimistic.
“It didn’t perform for us at the level that we would’ve wanted. We haven’t made any official decision yet about what we’re going to pick up in May, but I will say that the numbers, unfortunately, were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be.”
Following a short lived IMAX release, Inhumans premiered to decent numbers but continued to shed viewers week after week averaging 2.5M viewers and a 0.6 rating. While the series had plenty of lows, there were some bright spots such as Ken Leung’s Karnak and of course Lockjaw.
Perhaps rather than totally scrapping the propery, they could bring some of the better elements over to Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Personally, I’m dying to see Phil Coulson geek out over Lockjaw. What about you? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below.
